The scene set for August...

The nodes shifted on to the Leo (South Node) and Aquarius (North Node) axis in the last week of July. Mercury shot out of retrograde and Saturn shunted in joining Pluto and Neptune. The fabled stars exacted and its prophecy rang out through our worlds. All now return to their former multiple point pulsing as their transits continue the story after that seeding point. The Aquarius full moon flung open the gates while nodding to all our past and futures. Eclipse season is now upon us as the next sabbat turns the wheel again.

All dates are in Australian (Sydney) Eastern Standard Time (aest). Please adjust to the local time zone and place you live for this intel to make a real difference in your life. This month the moments really matter.

If you have a diary of any kind, may I also recommend manually dropping the big shifts in? Though robots and computers can do all the mundane scribing and scheduling for us, any astrologer or mystic will tell you that the research is where the wisdom hides waiting for you to discover it. Any neuroscientist will tell you how good pens and paper is for your brain and its learning. Only your mind can link the stars to your life and parse the patterns that matter. I love to muse on them well before they arrive and I do all of it, including this, by hand and head and heart.

Forewarned is not the same as forearmed if you don’t invite the knowledge into your daily lexicon and use it as part of your prophetic practice as well as your mundane.

August 1
Calendar Sabbat // Imbolc (south) and Lammas (north)
For the first time ever the calendar arrives before time. Feels like a miracle worth clocking for posterity, we may well have skipped into another dimension.

August 3
Chiron Retrograde in Taurus
Until the first week of next year, this retrograde bridges two distinct dimensions of healing and understanding for those paying attention to all the shadows knocking. In June our wounded healer finally moved on from Aries’ identity wounds and plunged us into the material world of the body, the earth and all our physical resources. Picking up where Urania left off revolutionising our relationship to all of the above in Taurus for the last seven years. Both ensuring none of us can proceed without paying our dues to the corporal nature of this life. When Chiron retrogrades back into Aries for a last hurrah, expect a potent physical preview of pain points or healing still required. Everything we have technically built atop the real world still has to put its roots and foundations into the good soil of material reality and experience. Healing is making it work on more than the imaginal plane. The difference will continue to show itself out.

August 7
Venus into Libra at 5.12am aest
Venus sits elevated in Libra casting her discerning gaze over a revolutionising relationship playing field. As everyone finally loses patience and tolerance for self service as a love language, Venus offers more than a spoonful of sugar to bridge the gaps in reciprocity. Diplomacy is the only way to meet in the middle. Charm is vastly underrated as a kindness and manners still go a very long way. The shadow of this transit abandons itself to all the others tugging on heartstrings and playing in the shallows of love as a transaction. Later this year Venus’ next retrograde will begin in Scorpio and end back in Libra as Lady Love makes her way through the shadows and fight of the Via Combusta. Smart socialites will be busy preparing for its fire season from now. No dead wood, no lit fuses, no false promises. To thine own self be lover, first.

Sabbat // Imbolc (south) and Lammas (north) at 9.41pm aest
The midpoint of Leo is halfway between solstice and equinox and its threshold has been observed since ancient times. In the south Imbolc heralds rebirth, the kind that starts to rumble underground long before it sprouts above. Life glimmers in a new way at this time of year. An intrinsic awakening and a clarion call from the future, from your resurrected self, to keep going. In the north Lammas marks the first of three harvest festivals, this first one operating as stock take of the high season and a heads up to eye your preparations for the descent. Literally the best time to make hay and the most of the light.

In a year of torrenting change our thresholds are precious resource, just as our rituals are blessed architecture.

Venus in Libra opposite Neptune retrograde in Aries
Lady Love arrives well prepared for a smoke show and Neptune’s favourite flaming cocktails as both let the hard edges soften. They throw wishes and dreams on the table and pick through the glitter together. Be wary of delusional wishboning and using flattery as a weapon to get your way. Nothing is set yet and the undertow is drawing us in ways we can only feel, not see.

August 10
Dark Moon O’Clock
If it feels like I am going a smidge early this month to the dark moon, you’d be right. This one’s crucial - consider it as vital prelude to an eclipse. Ruthlessly under-schedule and keep as many of its days as clear as you can. Consider how battened the hatches can be for a valuable day or two. This cauldron space will be seriously influential on your Leo eclipse experience. Plans are already afoot to cultivate a spacious and supportive balsam in the Coven.

Shot out of the Cancerian waterworld like a planet running for its life, this is the first of two sign changes Merc makes this month as the psychopomp tears through Leo. With a tendency to shoot from the heart while whirling in perpetual motion, watch the roaring and curb any prowling about looking for attention. Instead keep that marvellous mind busy with all we learned through last month’s everlong retrograde. With its shadow outrun and momentum building towards the eclipses, make sure that your reality is keeping pace with your revitalised perception among all the other wild currents.

Mars into Cancer at 6.30pm aest
As Mars slips into the cosmic womb space of Cancer he cultivates a familiar cardinality, teasing changing emotions to the surface. Intuition vies with impulsivity and sensitivity is fuelled with mixed results. Moods swing like trapeze. The crab’s hard shell is home to what lies beneath and Mars translates this into a fierce protection of all we fervently care for, belong to and come from. Home base as sacred terrain and the body HQ as fortified temple. Ancestral roots as anchor and firm friends as safe harbour in stormy seas. Passive aggression remains this transit’s seasonal allergy but you don’t have to succumb. Guilt trips are never compulsory travel. Boundaries remain a love language all of their own that create space from the fray. Navigate hamstrung power sulking or pouting manipulation with a boxer’s grace and fierce compassion. Movement remains Mars’ best medicine but even warriors get the blues; feed your spark with the comforts of home.

Venus in Virgo trine Urania in Gemini
This fascinating duo in conversation across the mutable axis have their eye on the event horizon. Both understand that shapeshifting is far more than a glamour and can only hold as long as your intention does. Despite best laid plans and all the careful energetic hygiene, lightning mainly strikes unscheduled. Wake up calls have a tendency to blare unannounced. Redirection remains a blessing in disguise. Move with the tangents and dwell in probability.

Nothing outs a shadow like the truth and Merc in tell it like it is mode is not taking any prisoners nor passengers on the charge. Every conversation has three levels: what is being said, what is not being said and what lies in the gulf between the two. If you leave the silence hanging inauthenticity will remove all doubt as to its intention. If you can marry truth to power you hold all the cards as the sky dances over you.

Solar Eclipse // New Moon in Leo at 3.36am at 20° Leo
The Leo new moon offers us all its whole heart with which to begin again, its epic bargain more than a fair trade for a total eclipsing. Deeply connected to the much larger cycles of change that have dominated our year to date, this threshold can conjure fresh streams of creativity borne of all that is authentically you and kick off a process that will carry us through to 2028. South node eclipses are clearance houses and the instant void of this eclipse opens a wonderful portal in which to drop the dross of all your old worlds, its magnificent syzygy the line of before and after. Amplified by Mercury and Jupiter, the Sun is eclipsed in the sign it rules as our world goes dark on something old so something new can be reborn. In the face of sudden change or circumstances, make courageous audacious choices for your future and those you can picture in it.

Mercury and Jupiter conjunction in Leo
And in the wake of an earth shaking total eclipse of the heart, Mercury whirls into the beating centre of it all. Jupiter is golden and in kingmaking mode for those willing to lead the parade into unchartered territory. This could supercharge an already lit up space or deliver much needed cut through after a wild ride. Keep a mystic’s eye fixed on the horizon and a lover’s on the world about you. Magic happens anyway sometimes. Stay flux-able as we move into the churn between behemoths.

Mars in Cancer square Neptune retrograde in Aries
This could feel like getting caught between a rock and a soft place that holds you to all its waterworks. Feelings and fluctuations in the current are to be expected but reactionary pouting will hardly cut the mustard. Illusions do not do well on days like this, delusions even less so. Shadow boxing is a mug’s game. Keep all ten toes down in the deeper intuitive tides or you will surrender everything and your energy to the fight.

Mercury in Leo trine Saturn in Aries
Though we be in the dead centre between the eclipses, everyone needs a fulcrum from which to pivot. As Merc’s heart in his mouth meets Saturn in world building mode, great things are possible. Negotiations get a glow up and fresh presentations garner different results... particularly when they ring with courage and derring-do. Clear comms are rewarded with secure step-ups. The future favours the brave and the Fool-ish.

When good fortune meets romantic wiles and nobody runs resistance, everything blooms all at once. Officially a red letter day for date nights, bold overtures and risky business. If you are going to walk on the wild side during this mad season, you may as well keep the stars on your good side. Bat those lashes, darklings. Flirting is a far more effective disarmer than force ever was, and worth its weight in gold as a negotiator. Charms work a treat too on days like these, witches.

Venus in Libra opposite Saturn in Aries
Lady Love and Father Time have more in common than first glances might afford, both devoted to a values system that reflects essence and rewards experience. What feels reciprocal and has legs in real life could root right into this polarity if all the cards have been placed on the table. Overblown resistance to such exposure is avoidant at best and an abandonment of the self at its most dangerous edge. Feel your way through the challenges and trust your impulse for your own fate.

For those not as comfortable with chaos, Virgo’s structured pragmatism arrives like hospital corners on a cold night. A mutable sign built on reliable adaptability, more than capable of switching gears in tandem with reality bites. As the earth element of the species Virgo uses an innate holy trinity of embodiment, purification and healing as its sacred offering. Care is a multi-directional blessing that grounds itself in ritual. Marrying discernment to critical thinking is elevated to an art form in Virgo, planning and the comfort of routine engineered as science. Preparing for tangents affords contingency and reasonable control fosters security through uncertainty. Lists become a spell all of their own.

Mercury into Virgo at 9.04pm aest
There’s no place like home and Merc has certainly been on a mad dash to get here, just in time to play a starring role in the next eclipse. Mercury in Virgo lets the change we have integrated on the fly meld into a moral compass that shifts perception permanently. The trickster in his own domain boasts supreme pattern recognition plugged into all the higher octaves, most especially the Uranian channel. Cultivate telepathy and all the ‘ceptions as your bespoke group intel rather than handling each as distinct threads. Make sure the weave is not pulled too tight. Similarly direct laser focus to any gaps in transmission or leaks in communication as the eclipses show up the fault lines.

Mercury Cazimi in Virgo
As Merc pinwheels through the heart of the sun on his way to the eclipse, epiphany could well arrive on winged heels. At the very least some clarity and cut-through, enough to move the needle before the sacrament. Look to this day to confirm any extra sensory perceptions that your whole world has been gaslighting for its own comfort or contingency. As the altar beckons and the knife glints in moonlight, make better choices once all the information is at your disposal. Consider that all the cazimis and epiphanies so far this year are combining to point to something very specific as the planets exact.

Lunar Eclipse // Pisces Full Moon at 2.18pm aest at the fabled 4th° Pisces
Every lunar eclipse demands a sacrifice and that we hold its relinquishing sacred to the path forwards. This wild season is not nearly over and the second eclipse in Pisces comes fully loaded. Opposite Mercury post cazimi and with Urania in Gemini squaring the lot in an alternating current of interruption and discord, this line-up is slipstreaming rapid blink change that will ripple for months to come. This eclipse brings closure to processes at play on the old axis of nodal influence since 2025 as part of the overlap that bloods us into the new. Seek completion where you can and misty eyed dissolution borne of surrender, because intention is at best an optimistic option. Trust the sky and hold fast to your soul’s deeper knowing, even when the world quakes and shakes.

What Was That?

In procession through the ages like a glittering string, eclipses ripple in multiple directions so this one will stretch its tendrils all the way into the new season now upon us. September issues forth a different chime. The world has changed irrevocably since we crossed the threshold of the last seasonal shift at solstice, in some strange way such a short and a long time ago. By the time the new month arrives, we will feel like we have again moved into another realm distinct from where we were when we started. The seeds that we cradled in July will begin to pulse in this new ground and very different weather.

This month’s Witch’s Calendar features the glorious evocative artwork of Tin Can Forest who also make wonderful zines and t-shirts from their creations.

Unlike any before it, this Leo season arrives in the unsettled midst of spectacular planetary configs holding us in their thrall. The stage is setting for one helluvan eclipse season. This evolutionary torrent likely to continue unabated as the chaos indeed forces our hearts to roar.

In our bodies the heart is the commander and our brain cannot function without it. If our leadership - of our lives, destinies and directions - is not generated from within this same place where our existence beats, we have lost our most vital centrepoint. Without its steady rhythm, we perish. When we dance to its singular song, we soar. We rule. We are in command of our lives. We are creative. We are courageous. We are truly lionhearted.

Leo season offers this most vital firepower to warm ourselves by, with room for basking even in the midst of apocalyptic reinvention. It flickers constant encouragement and nuzzles our creative underbellies. It calls us to nourish our hearts with their dearest desires, claiming our place in the pride and stalking new dreams.

Within days the sun will stand in opposition to Pluto in Aquaria, spinning the shadows and light already at play, bringing intensity and revelation to the ebbing of the fabled fourths. The cradle tips again leaving a taste of the eclipse axis to come. It may not be what you expect... perhaps the signature scent of this galloping year. This axis is most likely to conjure the courage required to speak truth to power, confront the places that hold us back - even if they are within - and court the future in ways that demand we rise to fully inhabit the brief. This is the latest preview of the next ep in that continuing series.

Leo season calls us together as a pack, a pride, an humanity and posturing is its shadow. Being sovereign is not the same as being selfish, and neither is leadership. With our eclipses soon originating in the lion's domain and the wheel always turning here too, dig even deeper into your heartmath to mainline its axis of change over the next two years. Your courage is as in demand as your strength.

The Merc Has Turned

Well that was some ten degree stretch back through all ye olde worlds, wasn’t it? By the time Mercury shifted gears again to end his dirty retrograde in today’s early morning smog you will have been gobsmacked, inconvenienced, wobbly, redirected, teary, collapsed, refilled and quite possibly remade. And all in the midst of the most remarkable configuration to grace our life's skies still ebbing and flowing.

It struck me as patently ridiculous that most all the infernal platforms I use daily as part of my business let fly with AI upgrades and re-configs during the transit, the one that none of their pop-astrology AI has yet cottoned on to as their kryptonite. Fools and horses in a year fairly chockers with them, I am looking forward to the grand unravelling that lies in wait.

Don’t you be thinking we are out of Merc’s riddling zone yet, either. Every retrograde has a pre and post shadow that has a very real whip in its tailings. It is the place where all this shit started and once Mercury returns to it, we are done. Once it too settles into memory, the liquid nature of this very effective transit will sink or float according to your willingness to feel it all as it happened. Did you adjust accordingly, or push the hard stuff away again? Did you avoid the ex files or are you still arguing with them in your head? Did you make the most of this regular life edit and marry it to your outer reaches? As the next turning points continue to arrive in waves, take time to note precisely where and how your perception has shifted, your mind has changed and your heart has sutured. Make sure the post shadow is for integration, not more back and forth.

Look anew from the start point and lament with month-younger-you who you may not have as much in common with anymore. Integration is kindness not judgement, or it just won’t stick.

Heart Yards

How is your heart?

I placed my hand gently on that heaving chest and looked up into watering eyes. Beneath the tremoring I could still see wars being fought, keen the sense of desolation and loss and much, much worse. Stripping sands scouring desolate plains, balling in capes of fear and pain, ignoring the ocean for the safety of heat and blood.

Where did you put your heart down?

The cage began to rattle, ribs drumming already what lips could not form words for. Panic rushing up the brain stem like a thief. The armour cracked like a false god, brittle with longing. Eyes dropped, rolling away down old streets to hide in drains until it was safe to come out.

Who has your heart now?

Left to rot in the hands of beggars and robbers, ones who boast the same empty shelf but refuse to keep hunting. They sate their hunger with cheap anaesthetics and blown up dolls, relics of the old world that spat the scars out.

Heartless is no way to live.

I took my hand away and turned back to my apothecary, nimble fingers reaching for the way. Began to weave the threads into a new lattice. Saw the sigil dancing in the light thrown across my warm counter and nodded to its warning and wisdom. Felt the belly hammer of my own heart count a different dose. Sat the potion high up on the shelf to brew.

The Pulse From Aquaria

Aquarian otherness is a unique force of nature. Future focused and fancy free, its alt-dimensionalism is tapped into the zeitgeist. Its fingers touching lightly on pulses that originate from directions yet to be taken, felt through second sight and translated into lightning.

With a firm flashing eye on rebirthing humanity, the moon moves into Aquaria next week in the wake of the nodes shifting and prepares to blaze full. Takes her place next to Pluto in retrograde conjuring any remaining shadows from the old world before its fall. She will again rock the cradle of transformation as she blazes opposite the Sun in Leo standing shoulder to giant shoulder with Jupiter. As has been the case for weeks this next lunar formation is a prism of the lattice that the outer planets have formed about us, a gathering place from which there is no turning back.

The noise is intense. A cacophony of beliefs and opinions undeniably trauma informed and force fed, shaped as equally by our over-use of devices as it is now by experience and its limits of understanding. This Aquarian full moon is not interested in the fight. Leaves conversion to old world missionaries who cannot permit freedoms beyond the ones they have chained themselves to. Who mangle intelligent debate in hysterical echo chambers that refuse expansion, on a fast track to their own dead ends.

Chaos is fertile. It births new paradigms, liberating the stuck and consuming the stagnant. A closed mind will oppress you more than any system can. This full moon may well reveal any corruption of free thinking and the unholy permissions you granted in fear and uncertainty.

Your liberation arrives with the peak in rebellion to the past and its old world order. Freedom isn’t wrapped in a flag or a furphy but your soul can sense its presence and stretches lit up into space. Your heart hums a tune still unsung as it dances to the beat of this different drummer.

Leo’s generative heartspace calls us beyond analysis paralysis and overthinking as an excuse to under feel. Aquarius’ achilles heel can be an unwillingness to pay as much attention to the body as its marvellous mind. Get out of your head and get everyone else out too.

Go with the flux. Seek flow. Do not grasp what isn’t yours. Banish any limits to your sovereign right to life well lived. Dispense with tradition and all the shoulds for a vaster inner space. Traded for a peculiar freedom that exists lit like a promise on the tip of your tongue.

The Aquarius full moon next week rises in a hail of future frequencies transmitting very distinct signals. Their combined fields blast open the door already left ajar into eclipse season. It is too late now to get ahead of this, or on the right side of things just in case you were still putting that off as you waited for conditions to change by themselves. Ship sailed, darklings. By then the nodes will have shifted on to an (initially) unforgiving axis of sovereignty and evolution, and it will show in all our worlds.

Even if you only live on or under the 3rd rock, this latest cultural slam dunk cannot have escaped your attention. Big Astrology is wrangling the stats and strangling the stars again. Surely the descendant Barbaults of the world are losing their minds as AI astro-fakers everywhere blow their algorithm to smithereens with teeming once in a lifetime astrology headlines. Nuking our feeds like good capitalists with a volume steadily increasing since every last minute late to the game AI astrologer clocked on last Thursday. Or more correctly, their human named generator did. In the same way I have never understood why vegetarian food is often made to resemble meat instead of vegetables, I do not get why our robots aren’t given their own naming universe as alluded to by one of Gen X’s more enduring spiritual life rafts, Star Wars. I have been primed to listen to R2-D2 over Claude since before I could swing a light sabre.

But here we all are with the AI vampire’s digital teeth sunk all the way into the current spewing another massive once in a lifetime opportunity to spike the nervous system, hype the urgency, shorten the span and control the magic of hapless humans. Happening daily in your neck of the algorithm and running continuously inside your realm now by design. A tale as old as time told again in the latest LLM and its universal language of control. The funnel is real and just like every other prophet and scary tale warned us before now, the devil came offering something convenient for free and told us it was good. Literal cheat code that just like every other shiny shortcut before it actually destroys the receiver. Careful now that in all our systems use is deemed consent.

Though it be harder to find than before, and we live in a world that could certainly do with less broadcast and more occult, real astrology is still distinct because it has a unique voice. Oh how our humanity stubbornly endures through its fingerprints and farts, its innate genius and dynamic audacity. The bell tower is still climbed by its channel: a real person who pores over the stars first as they have done for years and years and listens for what constellates within. Now you absolutely get extra points for actually doing the writing yourself in your own voice, which used to be the basic standard for everything from emails to essays. In the good old days where plagiarism - the larceny or sneaky inhabiting of someone else’s work that you pretended was yours - meant you could not think for yourself and were cheating to get ahead. The assumption that went with plagiarism was disqualification not disclaimers. There was no negotiation after the fact. Lately you can tell that we have not learned a thing and all those cheaters are now in charge of our dropping standards.

In the same way that everyone who uses botox or ozempic or cocaine thinks no one can tell, the formula for the astrology/spiritual plug-in is just as jarring. And then as all the same formulaic info appears in a muted rainbow of branded un-colors and fonts, people and voices whose eyes dart to other screens, it begins to consume itself. The summary loop tightens into a knot that finally pulls through. Which means again that as this beautiful cosmic choreography exacts it has already been lost to a vacuum whose galactic centre is a whirling «System.NullReferenceException» and a tech black hole that endlessly eats itself as it feeds.

If there is any field that has consistently endured and outlived human folly it must surely be the one generated by the planets, the moon and stars above. The frequencies that even our clunk still measures. Outer space and its luminaries that humans have variously cast as gods and monsters, guides and resources, since they first looked up. Every culture has its distinct sky lore, stories that teach us how to be part of this vaster cosmos and our peculiar human experience of it from an earthbound perspective. Modern Western culture still managed to reduce it further in line with every other severed link between ourselves and the nature we are part of, borne from and return to. All its economies of scale similarly redacted into a reverse torus field that is right on cue loudly disappearing up its own arse, just as prescribed by its own (h)allowed arts and sciences.

And the astrology concurs.

Rocking The Cradle

As Jupiter languorously rolled into formation overnight in Leo, the giant geometry begins to lean on a lever most of us did not know we had inside. Its siren activation was in February when Neptune and Saturn met at the initiating degree in Aries. An alert from the future, origin and source resonant, that may not have landed like a feather in your path. Perhaps it was a bomb, or hit like a lightning bolt, or conjured an old storm that finally had its way with your life. Something caught fire in the most fertile way, incendiary conditions required to blast open the husk so the seed could travel beyond its early protection, hectic but effective.

And if you are interested in coincidences or patterns or data or uncommon sense, stories or stars depending on which way you spin it, February’s huge conjunction was also dangling from an eclipse and a watery retrograde about to switch currents, cloaked in the fog of far more than the sum of its parts. Harder to spot and easier to chalk up in an instant, fascinating if you pull the lens of time and space further back. Its basket - from the same branch of post modern astrology if not the same sect - was slightly different known as a Mystic Rectangle. In another stream of consciousness as the Righteous Rectangle. Got one of those going on in your life, darkling? Seeing how the play pits them for and against each other at the same time? Your chart will have taken a direct hit, even if it is hard to decide if this is a good or a bad thing. It is both and significantly more. In a natal chart these concurrent combinations of sextiles and oppositions involving two pairs of planets looks like a flag, a net, a rune. Described as a windmill, an envelope, a ladder, these unusual aspects are their own Rorschach when overlaid on the continuing story of your life. Certainly worth musing upon while staring into the middle distance with a glass of something illuminating in your other outstretched hand.

The longer transits at play, or how the planets are in conversation with each other and what their combined fresh frequencies are conjuring in us, are multilayered. A weave rather than a singular thread and anyone who sets out to explain it deserves the applause for the effort it takes to become the dude with the red string for everyone else. In the Coven circle we convened last week for witches to wade through the multiple concurrents, we stopped after two hours of rolling it about in our congress. The thing I have learned most of all from tyre kickers and grazers alike is that while not everyone is into it, they also don’t want to miss out on it. The distillation of its essence is the danger, the ease of use that denigrates the design.

Regardless, the planets spin and the stars blaze and we choose and we cower.

Now from within something is gathering, frequencies colliding that conjure a quickening, growing tips twitching at the current, tendrils shimmering like an outstretched hand. We cannot know these places before we reach their torrents, and neither can we control where or how the resonance plucks our strings. But you can track it, feel into it, wonder at how it makes you move and what is shifts in your world. This aperture demands our palms open and eyes to the sky tuned to the only instrument we have that can truly translate for us. Jupiter in Leo is the final planet of the four to reach the focal 4th degree, some would say the behemoth that activates the charge. Now in fated aspect to Urania in Gemini, Neptune in Aries and Pluto in Aquaria enlivening all their fabled fourths. What makes this flash so rare and wonderful is not just how unlikely it is for this line-up to shimmer. Jupiter’s orbit is 12 years, Urania’s 84 years, Neptune’s 165 years and Pluto’s 248 years. All four outer planets exacting at the same fourth degree of fire and air signs, the music of their spheres chiming in harmonic resonance. A combined note that has never rung out across the universe before now, a herald and a head turner.

All the codes and keys streaming, secret things unlocking inside of you that cannot yet be held in words or even wrapped for safekeeping. Your tiny spinning part an electric fraction of the ineffable whole at this threshold, the one we will each remember for all kinds of reasons. Tipping points are like this, reorienting us in a way we sometimes cannot see clearly until we have moved through the turning. The many others plugged into this particular star prophecy dot our lives regularly since 2020. Multiple transits as energy shifts and builds, gives and takes.

Astrologers chant the continuing story of the stars in our own languages of understanding. Your chart hums yours beneath every moment of your life from its specific dance with the planets whether you believe in it or not. There are many real things that exist beyond our observation, approval or condescension particularly if you only speak one human language. Evolution always rewards diversity of matter and spirit. Some part of what gathers will be only yours at this specific juncture, some will be for later and some seeds will eventually take different root in others.

Sacred Geometry

Even as the planets began shifting into formation last year and the fable began to play out, I was enchanted by all the fours. Writing about this specific astrology again for our July Star, I was instantly transported. Back to the early years of my life when 4 was one of my favourite numbers, before I turned prime and irregular at 7. I never looked back through quite that lens until now, the good work of any fathomless retrograde if not its constant crick in the neck.

Maybe I am not the only analog kid who thought K’s were doing high kicks and S’s slithered through text as I learned to read but the shape of 4 always felt to me like a window, the irregular diamond on top of a wand. And at that same age, quarters were made out to be really really important though it would be many years before I did their deeper maths and put those four pieces together into a circle instead of a square. When I began reading about astrology in my teens the number 4 was also eerily similar to the glyph for Jupiter, a secret sigil that held its fraction as the split between spirit and matter. Its coding drew from the power of Zeus and the final say in what would go on to form our modern English alphabet. All these curious intersections mingling at this threshold, called upon simultaneously through four degrees of four signs creates a very specific shaped window.

In astrology each of the degrees also commands a peculiar frequency, holding domain and influence that weaves all the signs together like a tapestry. Ideas of what they mean have varied right throughout the ages. Modern degree theory is this century’s work of Serbian astrologer Nikola Stojanovic (published in 2002) which applied specific meaning to each of the zodiac’s individual degrees around its wheel. Some degrees wield more influence than others in a sign due to the resonance of their frequencies. I have long been obsessed with anaretic degrees because my chart pulses with a fair few of them. Critical degrees are the ones that get underlined, differing between signs and elements. 4° is the first anchor point, the critical degree of all mutable signs and the one that resonates with Cancer, whose themes we are all still soaking in. Calling in our good instinct for our own lives and connecting us to all our threads of belonging, ancient and unwound.

Four is a structural code and sacred key that weaves its peculiar union of opposites into our manifest world everywhere you look. It is written as natural law in so many ways, telegraphed through a multitude of our folklore and stories as a basis for our understanding. We live in a world of four seasons, directions, elements. Our biggest books tell tales of four gospels, caliphs, noble truths. We move through the four quarters of an hour, phases of a moon cycle, ages of our lives.

Perhaps the four horsemen of this galloping year of apocalypse are actually planetary. Listen for their hooves within you this weekend. Urania telegraphing inspiration and an electric multiplicity of vision. Pluto pulsing from the bleeding edge of the future, shadow streaming humanity’s extinction thresholds as portals. Jupiter conjuring visible distinction and heart led learning as Neptune reinvents and reignites the Dream and all your most audacious visions for your world. All four are in favourable aspects to each other until the end of the July, the portal open to dimensions the likes of which have not been possible before now.

Even if we let ourselves get swung up in galactic magic and high hope well beyond any tiny notions of swinging the frame, these are not weekend escape hatch stars. Consider instead that multiple transits strung like lanterns over much longer periods of time are sustained frequency torrents. In rare combination that will feel like nothing we have ever experienced before. The new territory is unfurling as we shift in its thrall, and these striking orbits.

That lever begins to move now, and you with it. You may feel it shunting into motion this weekend. Keep a glittering eye peeled on next weekend when the Scorpio moon swings the cradle and the nodes shift into this new axis of influence. We are not nearly done yet, darklings and neither are we cooked.

For years I chased Big Astrology, stymied by cloud and disappointed by rain as eclipses and transits worked their magic on me anyway mostly when I wasn’t looking. This particular morn that echoes in me still I set my alarm and rose before dawn as the moon peered through my window, calling. I dressed quickly and flew out into the twilight just creeping. I perched on a fallen log by the lake, my goodest girl by my side in the still of a perfect Winter morn. Together in the silence and awe of the early day we witnessed some of the most incredible natural magic there is.

All those years ago now my life and I sat between the moon and the sun and I was finally, beautifully, gratefully eclipsed. At the time a whole new direction had formed about me whose arms I could not feel yet, though I could faintly hear it beckoning from the place between two worlds that I was wandering lost. I was not the same as I had been but also not yet changed. Life looked bleak and unfamiliar and I was unsteady in the crossing. What was eluding me then was imagination, a tragedy for anyone who dreams. So caught up and weighed down by the darkness of my reality at the time, I could not conceive any bright possibility could lie beyond it.

It is all too easy as we skid and shudder through the black spots and dark thresholds of our lives to forget what lies beyond our own locked gates. Even if your life right now is playing hard to want or veering wildly, hope is the thing with feathers that can see beyond the limits of the near horizon. Your ticket to that hallowed place is imagination, tethered to every moon made new and all the different worlds waiting for your fated arrival. Faith in the path and trust in yourself sets your course towards its calling, echo location that will find you no matter how off course you may feel.

You remain your greatest axis of influence and at absolutely any time at all, at your leisure and your discretion, you can begin again as you wish. Similarly when big astrology washes over us all, you can wonder on its magic and do nothing more than bask in its flow.

The multiple fathoms of this very dark moon are shot with glimmers for those with eyes to feel the current. Even Cancer’s deepest doldrums are under the influence of Merc’s merry retrograde through the same deep waters. If you have been feeling the ping or even sharper sting we have now arrived to the transit’s glorious turning point. Yes, here in the depths of dark moon treacle, the sun flipping flares like a short order cook while everything teems in all our worlds at once.

Oh July. Oh the prophecy and the relentless gallop of this world tipping year. Here. Already. The dark moon cauldron disquieting as we approach the crossing with senses sharpened by the spray and roiling.

Mercury’s cazimi - a beautiful ancient Arabic word that means in the heart of - is when the trajectory of this much maligned transit tilt shifts, often delivering missing pieces, glimmers and signposts that support the reorientation in process. We are also here now, spinning. The planet closest to the sun is wheeling across its face like a manic mini eclipse that casts rainbows and shadows all at once. Every cazimi delivers revelation in the truest sense of the word, which could be a welcome boon for those addled by this retrograde and its dubious graces. You cannot hunt for this epiphany nor command it at will but you can trust it is due. Leave open a landing platform today. Get ready to change your mind. The axis of transformation is perception versus reality, because Mercury is only dealing in riddles as the psychopomp at the threshold. Back your intuition over any other external intel, or you will again be led astray.

The new moon incoming this eve is conjunct this Sun and Merc double header and will be pulsing in the wake of the cazimi. You too. The passage to this threshold is choppy and unchartered. Huge currents are arising from our murkiest / Merc-iest depths around families of origin and fields of belonging, the people and places that once upon a different time were home or harbour. The flashing opposites that suddenly obviously don’t cut the mustard are flaring and tightening the aperture, bringing strong feelings to the surface and old shadows as well. The wind is picking up on approach. In all of our deep ocean Cancer crossings we are in the moon’s domain. Sitting with alllllll the big feelings is a kindness rather than a process. Do not discard the native intelligence that flows down your face.

Crab Lore

From Morsel, my first book of tales published in 2022

From earliest days, the only thing the crab knew for sure was its shell. Its home was its back. Its pincers wore the same armour and its soft flesh was admirably protected by a cultivated crust. Able to drift with the tides, safely clamber over rocks and deftly bury themselves in the sand, a crab’s life seemed infinitely secure.

But on long dark nights when wind whipped the waves into an accusation and change stole the moon from the sky, the crab would feel a familiar constriction. Weep tears of excessive attachment to baptise the path beyond security, tremble at vulnerability and risk. Tender flesh pressed too tightly to the shell and yearning for a greater belonging.

Nostalgia tore at the little crab’s heart as it forced itself beyond the safety of all it knew and towards courage. Dragging its old shell to the sea’s shore, the crab sought the larger shelter of kin and found its place in the line.

Though the moon had hidden her face, her mother’s heart swelled as she watched the dance she knew so intimately. Her creatures lined up in perfect graduation from smallest to the largest and bravest of them all.

Gently Luna pulled the tide all the way out and cloaked the crab parade in the everloving embrace of her shadows. She gazed from afar as one by one they emerged, pale flesh quivering and desperate for room to move. Scuttling like startled children to the larger shell that had appeared by their side just when they feared growth would cost them their lives.

Gingerly a cast of crabs stretch out into the new. The tide anoints their fresh mettle and uncertain grace, flushing with pride. Nostalgia and grief mingle near the cliffs, chasing love in the currents. The moon beams fresh promises from places unseen that will make it to shore by morning.

.

And they will. You can bet your shells on it, darklings.

Diversity is the key that reflects the many prisms that live in each of us and the artificially constructed digital monocultural track is what locks you out.

The thing about magical days is that they tend to litter our lives with their graces, whether we are tuned into them or not. Liberally sprinkled through timelines that bow under the weight of modern life and sometimes intersecting with the days that our own stars scribe on our bones. This 6/7 window has been impressing its turning import upon us since ancient times, its movements a common spine that runs holds up the middle of the year. And so it does again, beyond retrograde and stationing points that feel heavy and add signature heft to this place.

We are all deep in the zone of our heaving planet’s annual aphelion, the earth at its greatest distance from the sun. Simultaneously sinking us into the whale belly of the year as the sun hurls frequencies from its the outer reaches that light up our skies with auroras. The plates are shifting and the evolutionary pressure is just as seismic as the planets telegraph rare formation. Everything feels a very long way from where we started out.

The dog days are far from over.

Beyond all that is teeming in this world, far above us and beyond the sun is aligning with Sirius in the northern skies. It appears, from earth, as though we have two suns. Sirius looks like a bright blue star in the pre-dawn sky before sunrise and was viewed by the ancients as the inherent god or goddess of the Dog-Star, the brightest star of the constellation Canis Major.

Like all the sky deities Sirius’ appearance in mythology and culture is varied, common and well distributed. The guises are many which means the wisdom is shared by humanity through the ages. Sometimes as Maera, daughter of the Titan Atlas. This name shared with the dog of the hero Ikarios, Lailaps the hound of Orion, and Kyon the golden-hound of Zeus. The blue dog star was associated with Orthos - which means morning twilight - and the hound of Geryon, giant of the west. The star was also connected with our fave hound-loving witch goddess Hecate, daughter of Perses the Destroyer and Asteria the Starry One.

In so many cultures since ancient times, now is when the year rebirths and makes new. The pre-dawn rising of the star in the path of the sun was believed to be its herald at the peak of Summer. In early Egypt celebrated as the Rising of the Nile and the inception of the next river cycle of abundance for the land. In many of the Slavic and early northern cultures this too was their new year, a time of renewal and moving into the next cycle.

Last weekend also saw the return to the skies of the Pleiades. This beautiful star cluster makes its home in Taurus and disappears from view in the southern hemisphere at the beginning of the cooler months. The Pleiades reappears in the pre-dawn sky in the middle of Winter, right about now. If you look to the east before sunrise you will see them towing in the dawn.

In Maori culture Matariki names both this celebration and the star cluster. The brightest star is the great mother Matariki surrounded by her daughters. In the kind of mythologies that witches tell around fires over steaming mugs, this constellation is also known as the seven sisters from stories harking back to the ancient worlds’ myths of the muses. In Native American folklore, as the seven star girls. In aboriginal lore as the water girls, with names changing according to the nation and its telling. In Hindu tales as the Krittika, the wives of the seven wise men named the ‘Seven Rishis’ or ‘Seven Sages'. In Japan as the subaru, a term that means unity. Perhaps you have another personal connection or understanding of this star cluster, a galactic whisper that tethers you to places beyond this one.

I love a good milestone, even moreso when my life ties it to an auspicios day. It was fifteen years ago, also on this very day, my life’s work adventure and this witch’s business was born. It began with a shop called Bohemia in a tiny town on the edge of a vast dark forest. In true Cancer fashion, that was the first shell. What lay beneath would reveal itself in increments, rebirth and reshape as it grew from deep within me. First - and always - my writing as I tentatively began an astrology blog and devoted myself to its craft and wonder. Cards came next, walking themselves off my lounge and into the shop, right there for me to grab when one of my tarot readers didn’t arrive but her client did. Moon meditations and markets clamoured to join, my voice reaching out into the wider world. My writing changed its shape and its name, as purpose outgrew its disguise. I shut the shop to focus on reading and writing, shadow and circles. So much still lay beyond Bohemia’s pretty gate.

As befits the nostalgia and tidal pull of retrograde, I have been wandering back through the secret alleys and shining milestones that have lead to Bohomofo's sweet sixteenth year. The magic words that became my first book and all that inspired them. The deep shadow dancing, mine constantly and others as guide. My return to herbalism and healing. Surviving the bans and bullshit of the online machine gun algorithm dance. So many stories of people and their remarkable lives. Breathtaking courage and inspiring true grit. A treasured community of darklings that extends all around the world. This beautiful sea of nostalgia and memories that has moved me in every possible way.

I remain inordinately proud of this body of work in progress, what I do and how I do it. Unlike those who cannot show the workings of things they have not birthed nor created themselves - because a prompt is not a calling - this shining path winds all the way back and forwards, over and upon itself. So much that I have learned to practice by doing it on repeat for years. The way I hold myself to the edges and don't shy away. The story so far that I have built into the meaningful life I dreamed up as a witchling. And this year everything beginning to line up in a whole new formation, again.

Words need readers, magic desires spellcasters and creativity thrives with ardent supporters that reject the slop of false fodder. Your presence has been a gift that continues to inspire me. Thank you for being here, darklings.

Tales of the New Moon in Cancer // July 2024

A strange mist rolled in with the new moon's morning, as though the sea was breathing fresh life into the land and lives of those who perched upon its shores. It reeked of salt and longing, its tendrils reaching deep into bellies and hearts to tickle their appetite for life.

Crows towed in the dawn, calling lament to the threshold as instinct guided their song. Its nourishment hung from the trees like gossamer, the sun flooding through the branches. Rays of light and shadow that flickered with knowing and did not flinch.

She perched on her step with steaming ginger and cloves and cinnamon, peered towards the gloaming. Through the clouds she could see soft shapes of her future dancing about, their margins obscured and drifting into each other. The old hag's words rang in her heart like a bell, gently chiding her constant craving. It is dangerous to know too much of your future, she croaked from within. Steals you from the task at hand. Sets your mind to craving. Kills the spark that lights the way.

She turned her focus back to the shimmering that enchanted her second sight and set it instead to wondering. The curious thing about gateways and portals and all manner of manic thresholds is that no two look the same. She recalled the many times she had arrived to this sense of everything irrevocably shifting. Sometimes on her knees, bloodied and broken. Sometimes quashing trepidation with her faith in new beginnings and their common magic. Sometimes whirling through the archway like a swan, her long neck reaching for the sweetness of its other side.

In the heavens above the sun and moon sailed through new doorways of their own, imperceptible to telescopes and accounting. Caught their beams on the hinges for those near the glistening shore. The dog star whispered fresh spells over the mystics and yearners, weaving dreams into the new day.

Gulp down your tea, child. That gentle dawning is calling to you still.

The second half of the year walks us into our next season of retrograde, a boon for those grappling with the relentless galloping of this year of wild transition. The sense of being between worlds and ways is palpable and in July formidable stars arrive to tilt our trajectories. Taking a formation unseen before now by anyone other than prophets and astrologers, what you pop in this month’s brimming basket could just change the remainder of your years to come.

We find ourselves in the thrall of multiple long playing transits, the likes of which never normally coincide. But we are so far out past everything we think we know and so far beyond what used to pass as security or sure things - the social contract, collective will, community responsibility - that we are no longer required to play by the old world’s rules. Its architects and controllers most certainly have not. As the few remaining veils fall away and retrograde leaks any secrets left, opportunity will not come walking through the smoke like a new god.

The preview - and perhaps too the staging ground - was July last year. Consider instead that now something precious is being called forth from within you by every single movement of stars and earth. Every tilt shift and every torrent, every setback and every silent prayer, their trajectories and transits meeting inside your soul’s library and conjuring what’s required from its akasha. The new world is not going to weave itself. Presence also demands participation, and care tending to the part that is yours to nurture.

With Pluto already retrograde and Neptune already stationing to turn back at the end of the week, both have the fated fourth degree in their orbit, getting in formation for the sequence that will define this decade at the very least. In the wake of an epic final day of June that shifted in several fresh directions, this day arrives as harbinger and herald. Pay attention to what is stirring, dreaming, calling.

July 4
Mars Urania conjunction at 3° Gemini
Though this transit has a significant intersection with the charts of America and a great many of our current world “leaders”, anything Uranian rarely arrives as prescribed. Punt the warmongering and naysaying into the same vat of salt you throw jingoism and fascism into please, fear feeds the wrong dragon inside us. Uranian anything is unpredictable, unexpected and completely out of the box. Mars in Gemini is a visionary warrior whose firepower and passion can combine in service of invention. This meeting looks fascinating on paper and will deliver the kind of tangents, lightning strikes and seismic floor fall-outs that we have come to expect from this year’s version of their stars. Also pinging Neptune and Pluto and the fabled fourth, this weekend could be prelude or main event that changes everything. Again. Refrain from passing judgement on whether it’s a good or a bad thing until well after Merc turns back the right way.

And in the wake of the Mars Urania shake up, Saturn and the sun would both like to know what you plan to do about it. In the midst of retrogrades and flummox points this day can arrive like a hard limit or a tough ask but any challenge also delivers an opportunity tucked into its grit. Tempting as it is to dig your heels in, let your heart rule the day for best results. Courage does not arise in spite of fear, it arrives because of it.

July 7
Neptune retrograde in Aries at 8.54pm aest from at 4° Aries
The burn turns as Neptune shifts focus and orientation on the fiery fabled fourth. Outer planet retrogrades are more societal subliminal hum than cattle prod but do not underestimate the power of their long playing change rays. From now until mid December any glamours not yet burned away in Neptune’s new digs will evaporate as many collective spells lift all at once. The delusions that once got a pass will go the same way as we begin to see this new ground zero in a whole new light. Once this year’s basket ballet has exacted Neptune will return to very first degree of Aries, the point he joined with Saturn to usher in a whole new foundation. What was seeded last April will be exposed to the myriad Neptunian retrograde imperatives, a quieter initiation into bringing those bold visions to life. If the dream needs to change shape, rebirth or reform, the blue planet in retrograde will foster the required reno and it must be an inside job to stick.

Meanwhile in Gemini Urania reaches the fabled fourth, sextiling Neptune in Aries at the fourth and trining Pluto rx in Aquaria at the fourth. The basket is taking shape and these mighty frequencies are combining in rare combinations all at once. The moon passing through Aries and conjunct Neptune turning adds extra dimensions of emotion and intuitive hits. Find yourself in this rare and magical current which will only intensify from here throughout July.

Venus moves into Virgo, a sign ruled by Mercury in retrograde, and communication takes priority over passion. Values become sacrosanct barometers for healthy existence. She casts a discerning eye over our love languages inviting us to do the same. Acts of selfless service that our humanity is built upon. Quality time and loving touch made precious again in an era of social distance and online isolation. Words used as affirmative action instead of weapons of mass confusion. Venus here reminds us that boundaries are a love language too and the greatest demonstration of mutual respect. For too long the rules of engagement have been determined in a darkness that never held itself to account in the light of day. Accountability is this era’s aphrodisiac, Lady Love won’t accept anything less.

New Moon in Cancer at 7.43pm at 21° Cancer
A gentle chime that invites us to tend our inner wellsprings, the moon’s moon made new ripples with all that Mercury’s retrograde is whispering into these waters. Tune deeply into what is organically changing in you like a tide drawing you in unfamiliar directions. Sink into the places that now feel like home even if you could not fathom belonging to them once upon a time. Rituals to nourish and nurture are well starred on any given day but particularly under this soft new moon.

Jupiter reaches at 4° Leo
And the Barbault basket is formed, cradling our future in its open bowl. Jupiter is the final planet to reach the focal degree now in fated aspect to Urania, Neptune and Pluto triggering all the other fabled fourths. What makes this so rare and wonderful is not just how unlikely it is. Jupiter’s orbit is 12 years, Urania’s 84 years, Neptune’s 165 years and Pluto’s 248 years and the music of their spheres meet in harmonic resonance. Each in favourable aspects to the myriad others until the end of the July, the portal open to dimensions the likes of which have not been possible before now. Consider this aspect a period of time - rather than a specific day - and a frequency torrent that will feel like nothing we have ever experienced. Impossible to anticipate look to novel effects and distinct influence that will ripple through every one of these days to come. Make a note to keep glittering eyes peeled around the 22nd of July when the moon reaches Scorpio, forming the handle of the basket and perhaps the most important passage of this fable written into all our destinies.

Unlike any before it, this Leo season arrives in the midst of all that aforementioned planetary magic that will then cede to eclipse season in August. The evolutionary torrent continues unabated and the chaos will indeed force our hearts to roar. If our leadership is not generated from within the place our existence beats, we have lost our most vital centrepoint. Without its steady rhythm, we perish. When we dance to its singular song, we soar. We rule. We are in command of our lives. We are creative. We are courageous. We are truly lionhearted. Leo season offers us this firepower to again warm ourselves by, with room for basking even in the midst of apocalyptic reinvention. It flickers constant encouragement and nuzzles our creative underbellies. It calls us to nourish our hearts with their dearest desires, claiming our place in the pride and stalking new dreams. Being sovereign is not the same as being selfish, and neither is leadership. With our eclipses soon originating in the lion’s domain and the wheel always turning here too, dig deeper into your Leo to mainline its axis of change over the next two years.

Well that was some ten degrees stretch back through your worlds, non? By the time Mercury shifts gears again you will have been gobsmacked, inconvenienced, redirected, collapsed, refilled and quite possibly remade. And all in the midst of the most remarkable configuration to grace our life’s skies. The liquid nature of this very good Merc-ing will sink or float according to your willingness to feel it all as it happens. Can you adjust accordingly? Did you avoid the ex files? Did you make the most of this regular life edit and marry it to your outer reaches? As the next turning point arrives, take time to note precisely where and how your perception has shifted, your mind has changed and your heart has sutured. Make sure the post shadow is for integration, not more back and forth.

Sun in Leo opposite Pluto in Aquaria
The sun king and the dark lord dance with the shadows and light at play, bringing intensity and revelation to the ebbing of the fabled fourths. A taste of the eclipse axis to come and the energies we will be playing among, today’s taste may not be what you expect... perhaps the signature scent of this galloping year. This day could conjure the courage required to speak truth to power, confront the places that hold us back - even if they are within - and court the future in ways that demand we rise to fully inhabit the brief.

Saturn retrograde at 5.56am aest at 14°Aries until December 11
Saturn’s retrograde re-activates the magic triangle of Urania, Neptune and Pluto that made all of us sit up and take notice last year. Busy initiating world building the likes of which most of us never expected as part of our remit on earth, Saturn’s hand in our back drums purpose and consequence in alternating beats. In retrograde we may be pushed up against old limits and regular quitting points with no option but to find a way. This isn’t a juncture that takes excuses but it does reward initiative. Saturn’s heft can feel heavy but beware of carting crosses that are not yours to bear. Stale commitments will wither on the vine as fresh responsibilities vie for your devotion. Beware the scoliosis of former postures that never delivered on their promise. If it isn’t authentically yours, it does not have the foundations the future requires.

Nodal Axis Sign Change //
North Node into Aquaria / South Node into Leo
The axis of influence shifts and so too our eclipses, which will now feature the radiating rays of both Pluto in Aquaria and Jupiter in Leo for the next year at least. Though the nodal shift may not be perceived among a very crowded cosmic choreography, it moves us from the elemental considerations of the feminine (water and earth) to the masculine (air and fire). A call to action and a blast of the formidable combo that can make it so, our next eighteen months on this axis will catapult us all into future timelines and frequencies.

Full Mooner // Authenticate in Aquarius
Our next full mooner will be a horse of a different colour as we use it to integrate a huge month of change. The circle to follow will ritualise your path from the last eclipse in February. This one is going to be something unusual, as you would expect from anything Aquarian. Details to follow as usual, darklings.

Sun Jupiter conjunction in Leo
The annual meeting of the sun king in his radiant domain with the big daddy of living large is one of those lucky days that is worth peppering with all kinds of wish work. At this end of the month and with a full moon on the rise, nothing is as it was when July began. Ideally your horizon has begun to shimmer, even if you cannot make out the shapes yet, and there is an unfamiliar zeal to your most aligned endeavours. If you had set your magics aside for retrograde or revamping, this is the day to pick the wand back up. Though some may advise shooting for the moon, this day is all about your heart’s truest desires. Listen for them roaring.

Aquarius Full Moon at 12.35am aest, the witching hour at 6° Aquaria
As the moon in the sign of the future blazes shoulder to shoulder with Pluto and Juno, she faces the sun meeting Jupiter. Their cazimi in Leo is a radiant blessing offering expansive regeneration and telegraphing all manner of novel possibility. The collective field has been torrented all month long with rare and unusual combinations of planetary harmonics. What cannot co-exist will have made itself known and this full moon offers to sweep the decks clear with a flow all of its own. The echo of the February eclipse that had us all in its sights now makes good on its promise, and our obvious potential.

Many years ago when a broken ankle laid me up and out of action, I spent weeks diving into the bone matrix. A lifelong learner with a tendency to fixate on what fascinates me until I get its marrow into mine, I am also the veteran of many broken bones. It took a very long time for my soul to realise that it was in a body until too late, usually just after I had smashed it. In my twenties I used to wonder if pain was the only thing that dragged me fully into my body because so much else used to pull me out of it. A baby and an autoimmune disease shifted all that because both demanded a presence that I could not opt out of. The first was easy and delightful, the latter much less so but both taught me unequivocally what my body could do. Our relationship to each other remains tender and feels new every time I discover something else extraordinary about these fleshy parts, how they sing to each other, how they care in communal chorus… for me. It feels as wondrous to me today as it did when I first began learning anatomy late last century.

In my mind’s eye, the imaginal realm where I have spent most of my time since as far back as I can remember, I have long seen glimmering codes and glyphs scribed on our bones. I watch how they shimmer and glow from within when someone fully inhabits those strolling frames. How the rolling seas that live within them are the definition of magic, in a place most fortified of all. How something so solid can house such fluid alchemy within and yet appear mostly inert.

The Bone Mother’s moon is just such a creature. Ruled by Saturn tearing everything a new one in Aries, in cahoots with Neptune serving molotov cocktails and dreams and all the while, beneath the noise, sweeping up our world in her steady graces. This Capricorn peak is so far under the influence that it would be arrested in other jurisdictions. It will arrive to us sandwiched between Merc’s next retrograde adventure through Cancer and Jupiter’s sashay into Leo. She squares her ruler, Saturn in cahoots with Neptune in Aries. She sails in under torrenting solar flares and the kind of frequency spikes that are moving seismic plates, in case you wonder why they really seem to be hitting you too. And that’s long before the bone mother fixes you with her steely gaze and starts asking direct questions about your mid year trajectory.

Welcome to a week that will tip a whole lot on its head, all orbiting around a full moon that could prove its salvation.

Shall I whisper to you about Mars moving into Gemini under cover of darkness this morn? An incursion subsequent to Mars' trudge through Taurus that proved Mars is far more than war, though you could be forgiven for thinking otherwise right now. In the same way that the masculine is far more nuanced than simply the active principle, one of its most glorious expressions is presence, steady and unwavering in the face of * gestures to the world at large * all this.

Then the switch is flipped. Mars in the twins’ domain is positively psychedelic, shifting perception and patterns with ease. Mutability is a remarkable skillset in times of revolution and change everywhere you look. As norms disappear and nothing may ever be certain again in the way we once believed, shapeshifters and the innately dynamic have significant evolutionary advantage. Urania’s influence electrifies everything Mars touches in Gemini, acting now with a sparkling fluidity that belies brute power as it underlines strength. Warmongers are not interested in this kind of Martian energy but inventors and philosophers most definitely are. Mars can pull dualling desires from deep within and pair bond them to right action to deliver on the electric promise of this transit. When Mars passes through the Uranian field, their meeting is more likely to be fascinating than fisticuffs. Run everything through the Urania filter from now regardless and let yourself be struck; its change-rays are unrelenting throughout July.

When night falls again Mercury will back the truck up for our next bout of retrograde hysteria as prelude to the moon’s peak. I have a Channel on the way about this most maligned transit that I have long championed, because these regular pauses are life edit buttons that allow us to put the past to bed. Yes, that’s a metaphor and yes, you can expect stinking ex anything to reappear and test you like the ghost of Christmas past. If you go back again, you failed and you do not move forward. These are the loops that we speculatively avoid and fall into anyway unless you have actually done the shadow work that should always follow a break up or down. Retrograde is the gift of integration that comes wrapped in the trickster’s riddles and the psychopomp’s kink for underworld journeying.

In Cancer this Mercury retrograde will reek of nostalgia, whispering tales of the past that long more than see. There is a great grief swelling as we each come to terms with the decimation of the world we used to love, and we wanted so badly to protect and preserve. Fortunately this very good Merc-ing is also most likely to effect the architects of its destruction and all their AI goblins. Our dependence on surveillance tech as entertainment and its relentless brain drain in the name of convenience has finally heard the death watch beetles beneath the floorboards, the plague of plagiarism that artists have been screaming about for years now. The markets are gasping under the weight of idiocratic inflation and no one believes the tech destiny argument anymore, if ever. Oh my stars I cannot wait to see what Mercury does to them, and all the old gods too.

Formulate grand plans to opt out of the online world for as much of this as possible, no mean feat in this age of complete immersion. Save yourself today particularly because Merc’s turning will bring a worldwide plunge into tears and fears. Even before we try to minimise tech, travel and murky comms, the tsunami of nostalgia and re-runs of old feelings could make for slippery indecision at best and truly awful returns at worst. Remind yourself (constantly) that the past is in your rear view mirror for a bunch of reasons not disqualified by retrograde amnesia. Remember (relentlessly) that this regular rx is supposed to change your mind, move you from stuck places and reinvent perspective for the better. It can also operate as a welcome pause and recalibration, replete with life-edits and real time resolution, but you best be prepared to feel it all.

On the far side of the full moon but still in the same fevered day Jupiter saunters beyond Cancer and into Leo, another tilt shift. Jupiter's enormous gift to us is opportunity and the knowledge borne of expansion. Jupe moves to unearth wisdom and craft the grandest vision of our life. In Leo beaming with golden rays and sorely needed optimism, conjuring leadership and heart led largesse. Jupiter is renowned for expanding wherever and whatever the giant traverses, alchemising that abundance into a rich and useful education. Here lies the power to make your mark, turn any leaden loss into gold and stop being the main thing that holds you back. Time now, even in this economy, to step fearlessly out under the blazing spotlight of your own life. Every one of us has a role to play in how this world gets rewritten and remade.

And in the centre of it all the bone mother’s moon rises over the fray with a cold clarity of vision. Capricorn forms the book ends of our year, the places where we make resolution and also throw the old behind us. Like the spine that runs right through each year, the Capricorn full moon is the mid rib, right near the heart of things as the Cancer current torrents beneath. If you listen carefully you can hear the ringing echo of all you tied to the first new moon of this year. The bone mother sits clicking her tongue and watches you do the calculations, some frankly remarkable maths that she knows is unlikely to get past Jupiter.

Though the solstice was last weekend sunstill has only just come to an end. This morn the sun began to move again as it rose across our horizons, but in a completely different direction along our sightlines. The flaring is no coincidence and neither its impact. So too our bodies reorientate, whether we clock it consciously or not, and know in a place beyond denying that we are not nearly done turning yet. There is far more to this adventure than perpetual forward motion and relentless pursuit.

Back in the days when I used to love crafting a tale for each of the moons and posting it the morning after, each conjured a particular mood opening a different channel within. Always the bone mother came to me unrelenting in her queries and her presence. Her new moon a scythe that slashed start and finish lines. Her full moon an invitation deep in to the belly of the year.

The Bone Mother

Pain and the full moon woke her to meet an uncommon chill that had crept all the way into her bones. The witch raised her weary head and let moonlight show her where she had fallen, her shroud still wet with tears. Grief hung heavy in her heart, its chandelier bowing the ceiling. Betrayal sat like a hard stone in her belly. The slashed mark on her heel still bled and smarted in the cold. Its clean cut would scar well as reminder to every step taken from now.

She let a moonbeam pull her unsteady and grateful to her feet. Spied a vast mound in the distance and a jumble of towering boulders in easier reach. Heard a whisper coming from beyond the stones that met something old inside her and limped towards the shelter of the clearing she could sense within the monoliths. The moonlight played with mist and her heavy hair. The still night sung in silence.

An old woman with steely wild tresses, her face in secret creases, surveyed the witch approaching with ice blue clarity. Heavy robes draped around her spiny frame beneath a cape of blackest night, the bone mother leaned on her gnarled staff and blinked a shrewd eye. The cailleach upon her in an instant, across her in a heartbeat and around her like a blessing when all hope seemed lost.

Come child, and sit by my blue fire while the tide pulls high. Turn the hag stone over in your hands until your tumbling wears it smoother. Watch the bone moon blaze and the dark lords play and the centaurs weep at the beauty and pain of it all. Come, pass the long night in my congress.

The witch followed the robust crone in sombre silence to a circle of standing stones. Sat gratefully by the fire crackling silver. Wrapped cold hands around a swirling mug of stars and scryed their dancing for a lark. Felt lightning sear the old scrolls open in her library. Breathed deeper than she had in shaky weeks.

The bone mother spoke her incantations over the flames. The sky arced and the world shook and the shouting faded away. In the caught breath before morning, the moon swirled fresh sigils into her marrow and its matrix shifted beyond old to ancient. Witchened by the flames, she rose to face the day.

Far out on the reef that I grew up on, the sun slow to rise now as we grind into solstice. Though you cannot tell if you peer into the world, the stilling that defines the solstice is taking hold. For four days the sun will not move from its point on our horizon as it rises and sinks over our longest days and nights, our end points and outer reaches, seasonally adjusted.

This is the solstice, the still point
of the sun, its cusp and midnight,
the year’s threshold
and unlocking, where the past
lets go of and becomes the future;
the place of caught breath, the door

I have loved these words so long that they operate as a spell all of their own, ringing in my head on approach every six months like a loop, a snare, a catch in my existence that regularly asks the same of a different version of me. Any threshold wants your attention too and whispers the same questions into the breezes that swirl through your world.

This one forms the cross that divides the wheel into four quadrants, or seasons. The threshold is the cardinal ingress, a hingeing point by name and by nature. Cardinal water, the season that sinks us into its various graces ruled by the moon. Doorway to the next season of our lives which sets in from here, differently depending where you live and walk with the wheel of nature. All the cogs turn and catch at similar points because they are inextricably woven; nature and time and space and weather and all the heavenly bodies including yours.

For centuries and time immemorial all of our ancestors venerated this threshold. It wasn’t that they lived “close” to nature, as though the artifice we have constructed atop it has changed the essence of life on earth. They were part of the world they lived in, so “nature” wasn’t separate. It determined their lives, how they moved and where they went, what they ate and how they dressed, how they felt and what they thought. Is it not still the same for you too? Somewhere beneath the global screaming and constant lightspeed space of life on screens. Deep in the craving for simple or real or slow. Lingering in the maw that hungers for connection that isn’t contrived, gated or watched.

The wheel of the year reminds us of the pace our bodies are built for, the one that lets us live and thrive as part of a far grander cycle. There is remarkable regulation built in, centuries away from the apocalyptic anxiety that defines most of our waking moments these days. Our lives, like the seasons, have their harvest and their attrition which is how things stay in balance. The maxim of this too shall pass rests on the pendulum swing of this perpetual motion and law of our universe. So whether it is constant growth or youth or profit or claim, our world’s artifice and entitlement its reaching the peak of its end game. The furthest tipping point of maximum imbalance. The teeming trough of bread and circuses, darkness and depravity, the imaginary heights of baked in structural inequity and a manifest lack of integrity.

As a practicing witch who keens a deep sense of reverence to the old ways as much as symbiotic obligation for the traditions that hold us close to the elemental dance of life on earth, observation of these sabbats is deeply personal. Here I find my faith and what I consider to be divine. I like to peer into these thresholds as pools as much as portals, scrying their architecture as part of my own regular ritual practice, the one I have etched over the years on to these spokes as I pass them by once more. They operate as milestones in my life, places from which to look forwards and backwards. As crossroads that show me where and how choices and mindset have shifted since the last season. At each vantage I can feel into how the new season is inviting me into its imperatives this year and apply that to what is actually going on in my life.

No threshold speaks in a tongue you can understand if you refuse its shadows, or your own dancing as you pass through. Not sure how to clock them as everything conspires you to carry you away with it? Anything you draw out of your chattering head and create all by yourself with hands and heart carries your frequency and your intention at the time. It is a reflection and too a revelation. As witches we may call it spellcraft or ritual. As artists and inventors, we may call it creativity. In the age of AI encroachment on our bodies and minds, it will increasingly become the vital link to our uncorrupted humanity.

The solstice still point tows in Cancer season as Gemini’s skittery skattery switch hitting finally gives way to oceanic depths. Now may we float instead of glitch, and not a moment too soon. This deeper shift and re-alignment is oft as imperceptible as it is immense. The move into Cancer is cardinal territory, dynamic initiation that does not ask before it demands seasonal dexterity. Cancer season ordinarily plunges us into all the feels and heightens sensitivity. To everything and everyone, which means you cannot ignore anything - or anyone - that feels off. The ick is real. Astrologer Rick Levine plugs Chiron into our chart as a marker of our humanity. Certainly most all our life stories feature a wound that begets a challenge, whose initiation fosters transcendent growth, the story all of us have that would break a heart if you could tell it true. Remember the days before The Great Uncertainty, when the change of season was an optional quarterly opportunity to transform? In the heady far less complicated years before changes of state became the everloving imperative that none can ignore, its secret task lying tucked in wait inside all of us for precisely this time in our lives.

We are at beyond the midpoint between eclipses and freshly reoriented into the new season. Deep in the churning swirl that will eventually lead to solstice, its spiralling scribbling codes and keys on our skin from inside the portal. All the planets have moved in formation. The veils have dropped and blown away towards the shining coast. Shadows whip about above ground uncertain in the sun. Still there is even more playing out, being revealed and too being obscured. We are all so scared of change and yet most can reel off a long list of things they would like to be different in their lives. Knowing it is quite the citadel and a stunning first turning point. Changing it is the second, the committed devotion to its doing that takes longer and works you harder and makes you wonder why. Twin pillars that hold up the bridge over the river you must cross. Weave what you learned under the last blue moon into your passage to the solstice gate. And know that times like this particular fulcrum are a slipstream to which you can align, aiding your passage. Shapeshifting is a vastly underestimated magic considering how common it is. You have already done it so many times in your life. Utterly and completely changed your shape, I mean. Grew a limb back when your life had cut it off, sometimes a whole organ. Sprouted wings when you needed to fly. A mermaid’s tale when freediving in the deeper currents of your life. Inhabited the guise or form of another creature outside your own, to charm or to menace. Shapeshifting comes naturally to witches and to women who don’t look away from this constant ability. You cannot hold too fast to someone else’s fixed idea of yourself if you want to shift regularly, and it’s best you do. Shapeshifting holds great power to transform, which is why it has been degraded to a cheap fairytale or a wanton inconsistency. It is neither and far greater still.

Though mythology, Michael J Fox movies and occasional premenstrual lucid dreaming would have us believe we explode into the form of an animal, shapeshifting takes many subtle forms. I have been hunting it in stories since I was very young, enchanted by the ability to see through an eagle’s eyes or run through the forest like a fox. Native American stories name those who can change their form into animals as skinwalkers. In Japanese culture, the magics are known as henge. Witches employ glamours to shift their appearance, for secret reasons known only known to them at the time. Shamans and mages regularly transform themselves to suit their purpose and imaginal environs. The thread of transformation that runs through all cultures and their mythologies employs shapeshifting as its highest magic. Combined with an intentional journey beyond regular consciousness, the practice can be known as witchwalking.

Witches, women, wanderers. Walking and weaving and midwifing the new. This ancient codex is written on your bones. Its secret gnosis lies languishing somewhere towards the back of your skull and when you sleep on it at night you are transported. Like any magical skill, its conscious utilisation takes focus and practice and devotion to the task, paired with a good understanding of its power and purpose.

There is also a necessity at the roots of this practice. In many of the archaic, matriarchal cultures, from Catal Huyuk to the Hathor cult of ancient Egypt, there are embedded midwifery skills within the Witchwalking practices. The Moura Encantada, the female shape-shifters of Southern Europe, for example, were said to travel between megalithic sites, creating new life and spinning the sun. These motifs of ‘spinning’ and ‘new life’ epitomise the coded and almost forgotten wise-women who assisted with childbirth and who were believed to draw souls from the spiritual realm and into new bodies. It is movement and motion - of any kind - that is at the basis of the practice of witchwalking. A methodical mindless physical activity that lets your mind wend and wander. If you have ever walked a labyrinth or a well trodden familiar path, you will recall its soporific quality. Drumming is another method to transport yourself this way, as is free dancing or whirling like a dervish. Witchwalking is a journey made through the portal of your mind, activated by the movement of your body, into an altered state. One that allows you to peer into your consciousness, peek beyond your life and its perceived limits and leap into the imaginal realm. That is where all the magic happens. Anything is possible. Limits don’t exist. Solution and inspiration dance within.

It pains me to have to write it, but you cannot go a-witchwalking with a phone on you or headphones in your ears. Clear body, clear mind, sweeping repetitive movement, wind in your hair, the sounds of nature whispering in secret tongues. You have to let your mind go free, beyond the everyday mundane urgencies, most of which aren’t really yours to hold to your breast. Perhaps dragging an intention or question softly behind you as you wend.

When transforming during a waning moon, it is more important to be clear about what you want to change things from, than what you think you can shift them to. Leave that in the hands and feet of the ancient witchwalkers that weave from beyond the veil and the next new moon.

It seems entirely appropriate to be launching the new Apothekerrie Journal on Earth Day. Apothekerrie is a real life business established in 2024, when I began my solo lady tradie gardening business on Sydney’s northern beaches. Hands in soil and not a screen in sight, the joy is real and the job satisfaction is out of this world.

Apothekerrie gardens caters to elder women with balcony spruce-ups and small herb gardens, helping with movement and maintenance and always up for a cuppa and a chat. Everyone has a story, a history and a common connection to the natural world and sometimes an hour or two can make all the difference to green and gorgeous spaces. Plants settle our nervous systems, clear the air and beautify every space they occupy.

Apothekerrie has been the brand name of my range of herbal potions and medicinal balms, flower essences and flying ointments since then, as Lady Bohemia’s magics evolved beyond its early days in my country kitchen in the Hunter Valley. The ebbing blue moon delivered June and the fulcrum of a year that has not stopped since it got going early. Every month has borne a distinct set of reflections that has then sharply given way to the next, and the next flash fade prism after that. This month may well be the closest we will get to a go-slow given what lies in wait for July. Catching your breath and recalibrating after a torrid first half is well starred so make the very most of it.

June layers up more sign changes, solstice and the next Mercury retrograde. By month’s end the cradle of change will finally be set in place, its planetary combination a prophecy all of its own. Naturally it garners novel attunement; everything changes well beyond recognition from here. This passage of time is a significant realignment whose seismic impact will be felt much later on, so how you move now matters greatly. Small adjustments will ripple nicely into future fields of influence. June will help us pull many disparate pieces in closer, working out how their mosiac fits together now as life in the making. When accepted norms no longer exist as guarantees or even relics, this is an important new avenue of communal integrity.

Gemini feels counterfeit this year with so much already copping the splashback of Cancerian waterworks. The union of opposites that counts is coherence between head and heart, never more under the spotlight than June when the tide shifts from one to the other. Enough of the splitting that tears us apart. It is ridiculous to indulge a war within yourself from opposing sides, better to separate brackish influence from instinct. Forego all this faux regulation for expanded capacity, which counts for much more. Its full spectrum practice pushes up gently against any emotional outer limits. We have big feelings because things matter to us. With all the shadows dancing above ground and even past life miasma feeling the squeeze of evolution, hiding from thine own is a futile pursuit. A life well lived is never under-felt, and even less understood at the time.

Mercury into Cancer at 9.55pm aest
Merc’s move into Cancer for the next few months features our next revision test and retrograde, holding our winged heels underwater until August. All the better to marry marvellous minds to fervent feelings, building a refreshed emotional fluency that could just rejoin the broken links between heart and head. Turns out the whole of the old world, its crumbling towers and flailing architects are themselves too emotional for leadership after all. Wild dysregulation and obvious immaturity do not a good human make, no matter the spin. Our emotions remain our first language, a currency that barters and flows between the holy trinity of mind, body and spirit. Emotional force is not optional and its hijacking has long been as intentional as its shaming. Our empathy is most of what constitutes our humanity or its galling opposite. We are more than herd animals, we are also a hive mind and all of these connections count.

In and out of aspect and retrograde, Mercury will repeatedly shifts currents in Cancer, swirling perception while asking our rising tides to raise more than our own little boat. Take the next few months to forego routine reframing of your feelings and you will find yourself more at home than ever before.

... just as the wild card planet rolls further into Gemini than ever before. We are in unchartered Uranian terroir on almost every front and it has barely been more than a month, and change. So much change. The nodes are in their last hurrah on the Pisces (north) and Virgo (south) axis of influence. Consider this weird triangulation a long goodbye tour that will see the past and future dragged into broad relief and then increasingly micro-needled by this month long Uranian ping. June’s underscore will scribe in no uncertain terms all that has earned its place in your future and what has definitely passed its expiry / expulsion / execution date. Adjust accordingly or the nodal shift in late July will set you up for a very challenging next eclipse season in August. Gentle reminder that Urania does not play by your rules nor anyone else’s. This is the officially lucky day of the month so expect to see all the AI astrology lighting a candle and make a fortune on this once in a lifetime..... Witches know that courting Fortuna is more than a one time excursion, and that this is an annual planetary congress. Lady Love putting head and heart together with our cosmic benefactor does of course offer its regular charms but in Cancer it asks deeper questions of our integral values. Consider that its love light may also show up what no longer deserves a place in your new world pantheon, the one where authenticity and integrity count for far more than the empress and emperors’ new clothes. At the anaretic degree Chiron is winding up his Arian adventure this month and this means time is up on seven years of identity wrangling. If you have not yet picked your own side over the jumper you had thrust over your wee head or stolen right out of your hands, Lady Love has news for you from the depths of Cancer’s emo waterworld. Blame remains an own goal. If you keep strapping yourself to the tracks, the shame train will run you over every time. Unconditional positive regard and good old fashioned self love are the novelty sized keys that set you free from the prison you may have made of your wounds. Healing is not the identity you carve next but it will grant you access to Chiron’s next school of learning.

Venus striding into Leo trades tender excavations for living and loving out loud, the perfect celestial accompaniment to the second half of Pride month. Cocktails for everyone! During her time in Leo, Venus will sextile Urania courting that prismatic Gemini mood lightning, trine Neptune in Aries like poetry in motion and oppose Pluto in Aquaria, an intense friction point that could spill into power struggles or passionate magnetism.

I wonder if the question asked most of Sagg anything is to do with the sheer audacity. Fearless or shameless or just shouting the whole truth without a hint of guile. Most of our relationship to audacity depends on whether we are its intended benefactor, victim or player. Sagg is all three all the time and this blue moon knocks it out of the park. Anticipate revelation, the kind that lands in service of clarity and lets you adjust accordingly.

The strange pinpoint of this Sagg apogee is likely to deliver things that cannot be shoved back under carpets or into boxes and buried deep. The kind of gnosis that shifts trajectories, conjures truth telling and refuses to even try shoving the genie back in the bottle. You can always bank on knowing more after a Sagg full moon than you did before it, but the quieter debate is usually on whether or not you can unsee it. It speaks deeply from the realm of women’s mysteries that have never traditionally been lauded, more’s the pity, for the crone is the oldest wisest. Inevitably the coolest, in every sense, because she cares little and is shaped even less by the gaze of others. Steely and unrelenting in her own. She speaks from the boon of maturity, the bloom of a life well lived and understood, whose reverence for life’s final and most difficult initiations is the platform on which her wisdom is built.

You cannot fake or cajole the connection to your inner crone. And neither can you mistake its veteran’s gait. The depth to crone power and knowing is borne of her proximity to darkness and oblivion. She cannot be love and light-washed, nor dressed up in the priestesses new clothes. She is a death walker. She is an inevitable soothsayer. She is a hard won ally and augur of personal power. She lives deep in the shadows - especially in this overculture - and it takes a long quest all of its own to know her.

The crone, the archer and this deep blue moon all have one thing in common. They are unflinching. Their sight is long in different ways. As a scrying pool this particular Sagg full moon is perhaps unsurpassed in its depth and length, which grants you a days long window in which to use its telescope and microscope alike.

Winter Retreat

There is nothing like a good wintering. The deepest cold and longest nights deliver their own alchemy every time the wheel walks us through its darkness. This Winter I am looking forward to being a part of NEST By Roots Women’s Winter Retreat from Friday 24th July until Monday 27th July in Kenthurst, south of Sydney.

On the Saturday of the retreat I will be offering two workshops. The first is one of my favourite subjects and the raison d’etre of our Coven Electric since 2019. Ritual Architecture is all about how to build real life practices and move your magic off screens and into your real worlds. I will be going deeper in with Shadow Work For Women. As befits a good wintering, we will be exploring the intersection of intuition, self care and the shadow digging deeper into how these threads weave our lives together.

On the Sunday I will be offering tarot and short shadow sessions, as a bridge to an online Shadow Portal coming this August with our next eclipse season. And of course you will be the first to hear all about it here, darklings.

Well into the most ungrounded Taurus season in a long time, thanks to the ongoing revolution of humanity and its batshit architects of destruction. Every month this year has delivered a fresh planetary signature and a large raft of quaking changes in its wake. Now in May this new zodiac year’s first good earthing has been volcanic, magnifying the shaking ground we all still tread so heavily upon. Resources under constant threat and shortage looming. Democracy disappeared down a fissure. The threat of machines and mayhem as the only predictive model claiming all the flashing screens, serving unchecked consequence on the earth. The soma increasing its concentration as bodies are highjacked and nervous systems are fried, permission granted in a flashing click.

Taurus offers us a card carrying invitation to return to our true nature. The one that is closest to your soul self, that derives joy from its senses and this whirling around the sun. Life’s simplest pleasures are found in this domain, too often traded for the more questionable imperatives of modern life.

Taurus offers balm through the body, certainty through steady knowing grounded in lived existence. Perhaps a taller order this year swirling with uncertainty, rendering its care a fine art. Looking up remains its own reward. The astrology of May and beyond continues to move us from top down to ground up, from the few to the many, from the bad old ways to what is birthing from chaos, in quieter darker places than the main stage or the set-spangled multiverse.

The scorpion’s moon blazes unaspected, solitary in a still stark sky, its revelations and reckonings will arrive sharply with the peak. In tandem we remain ‘neath the influence of ebbing evolutionary star games; Mars in rulership from Aries, supercharged and still in conversation with the stellium. Mercury and Chiron in conversation at the far end of the ram’s lair, raving about redemption to the moon who wrote its codex. Pluto in Aquaria in deeper conversation with Urania’s switch hitting than this shadow dancer’s moon, the dark lord already stationed to turn on us all in its wake. The shadows that show will determine the month and more to come.

Merc’s charge through Taurus on his way to his next adventure has unearthed where our minds may have got stuck in the mud of the old world and its inhumane tenets. They never worked for us, just for them. As revolution moves us all ready or not, Merc makes us play catch up fast. If Merc’s charge through Aries unleashed the bombast and occasional flamethrower, in the bull’s realm he patiently stitches mind back to body and measured consequence. The senses reclaim pride of place in our mental architecture. Now persistence pays off, practice makes perfect and discipline delivers. Consistency is a self love language. Pleasure is an intelligent state of grace. Every planetary ingress into Taurus squares off with the dark lord, weighing what yet lurks in the shadow against evolution. Every exit softens this angle into something we can harmonise with. Pluto playing fast and long with power and regeneration from a lofty perch in Aquaria, setting landmines by the gates.

Sabbat Tidings
The calendar sabbat of Beltane in the North and Samhain in the South is oft observed on the first day of May. In the Wheel of the Year the midpoint of the sun’s journey from equinox to solstice is found in the centre of Taurus, which this year is Tuesday 5th May at 9.37pm aest. Witches new to our Coven or the Wheel can dive into our Sabbat Tides collection here written for every sabbat and all corners of the earth.

Pluto Retrograde at 5° Aquarius
Pluto’s great work is ordinarily occulted, working from the ground down and the inside out. Hades clarion call to our humanity is seismically reshaping our realm, anarchic mode that is disrupt by design in service of the future. Pluto deals in shadows and the currency is power. Aquarius deals in frequencies and the currency is authenticity. There is no deep faking it from here, a ruse that will no longer hold water nor bear weight. Pluto’s retrograde will take us up to the threshold of Scorp season and conjure all the shadows that chain us to the past and keep us from our future visions. One at a time, darklings.

Dark Moon Phase begins
This month’s dark moon features a magical spark, but still begs you get your home ground in fresh order. Setting your own pace is one (difficult) thing but making time / space that is unscheduled is quite another. It can remain your monthly balm for the addled mind or weary soul if you plan to make it so. The three days of the dark moon are more likely to feel heavy in our stuck places and beg the balm of body based wisdom.

There’s not just a lot going on, down and beyond; shit has morphed from mythological to existential. The old I Am, hitting like a 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 punch. This week shall not be easily ignored.

Looking down its barrel from the April Witch’s Calendar ...

Brace yourself. This is about as Aries as things are ever gonna get. Trumpets please, and maybe a piece of corrogated iron for good measure. Featuring a ramrod stellium - in order of their Aries degrees placements - count ‘em: Mercury & Neptune in the early degrees with Mars & Saturn. And then at the far end of Aries Chiron and Eris, the Sun and the beautiful Aries new moon. This is one of the biggest reset buttons the world has seen to date, though it may not only be a powder keg. Do not underestimate power nor passion, especially in highly concentrated doses. These days underlined in red could be just the gravity required for real change. Its initiation sequence already loading, and only increasing in intensity through the dark moon.

The Libran full moon rises over this week as checkpoint and palate cleanser, the first in the new astrological year and fading wake of a torrid eclipse season. Retro rear vision mirrors are no longer clamoring for our attention with flashy undones. With all planets in direct motion until May and most of in Aries, this horse year finally begins to gallop through the smoke and mirrors of the old world now dying at its own hand.

Empires always end this way, in a cloud of hubris and entitlement that disregards suffering and consequence. Monsters have a tendency to take many down with them as they go, refusing to die quietly or well. Meanwhile the curtain yanked all the way back to gasps of horror flaps in the winds of change, at everyone still looking away. The rot revealed as foundation stone while the system still devours all it claimed coquettishly to serve. The slow falling guillotine of all the -cides colliding as the world tips even further the wrong way.

I will always lament the power of a few shit men to force our collective gaze, never more keenly focused on a narrow strait than now. It remains remarkable the way the whole world has been shredded, ribboned into such a multiplicity of virtual streams in such a short space of time. It means that the peninsula you have been squinting at for weeks determines how you feel about Here and Now, as well as What and Why, borne of the savvy diverse choices you have made when it comes to media and opinion. Your algorithm, purchasing choices and plethora of tracking devices decided the rest for you.

Those of us who grew up drinking from the hose remember a time when you did not have to hold the weight of the whole world’s constantly streaming hot takes in your head. Those of us with differently shaped minds borne of analogue learning and lived experience remember when your attention was not farmed as primary commodity. Days that were not winnowed through artificial gates and narrow synapse. Lives centered in what you were doing rather than what you were watching.

Since equinox the world has again felt mythological. Still here we all are as the worm turns, and the earth quakes beneath our feet. The old maps don’t work. The time of inversion that preceded ensured we do not trust them, nor their architects any more. Information itself has become speculative and certainty as elusive as the whole truth. We are all in an abusive relationship with tech and the AI cleanskins get fewer by the digit.

Equinox is the balance beam of the sun’s journey around the wheel of the year but it rarely feels like an equal moment. More commonly the weeks before and after tend to prove the places where we still wobble, or falter. The astrological new year tapping on its watch and tearing up the resolutions leftover from the one at lunar year in February, and the one before that when everyone was still covered in December. Aries did not stutter and is already streaking off into the distance. Having moved through the first three stelliums of the year - because every star stretch has been a study in concentration - we now charge into the fourth and everything is rent ramrod. This year’s initiation tests are not playing around. None of us can go back now the threshold has been crossed.

Initiation is powerful currency. There is an enchanted force that aligns with those willing to bravely cross thresholds and take giant leaps of faith. The trusters of soft wings and broad feet, who can wrangle a rocky landing into unknown territory and smile widely at what greets them. Dawn watchers and time keepers who greet their future with open arms and welcome the full spectrum of their next adventure through the wild unknown. I trust those life sparkers - moments, people, places - like nothing else, even when they smart or sting.

Soon the Libran full moon rises over it all and well may we wonder what lies upon its scales. What has this past week truly been impressing upon you, held tight or torn in your hands? The Aries Libra axis is a riddle in relationship to everything, whose kryptonite is the kind of disconnection the modern world foments. These days embodiment is taught instead of lived, making a minefield out of the quest to know thyself and the other. This axis will keep asking us to strive for balance between the two, rather than the nearest artificial approximation.

This full moon is agitating the entire Aries stellium from now in a wide arc of exposure that reveals motive, machination and firepower. Things shift fast for the next month in a field already flooded; the canny set their own pace. Venus is in charge of the pink peak from her domicile, newly ensconced in her home state of Taurus inviting a return to the body divine, the temple of the spirit and the earth. But Lady Love is still in lingering conversation with Chiron, licking wounds still to be salted with more than half the cosmos yet to stop by. She is disrupted by her square dancing with Pluto in Aquarius, just in case you thought all this jiving with the shadows might pass. Unlikely in this economy, or at the hands of the muppets who crashed it. The lovely Libran moon itself forming a square to Jupiter in Cancer, enlarging the frame and testing recent retrograde learning curves. Tucked into all its X Marks The Spot is Hecate, mistress of the crossroads with her dark retinue.

This is not a mooner you want to miss, darklings.

April Fools

April fools are some of my favourite pagans. The term itself a quaint shaming that dates back to the 16th century when annual inception was pushed from Spring back into midwinter by cardinals with different designs on power. The many whose religious head had not yet been turned and who continued to defiantly celebrate the arrival of a fresh new cycle of growth were derided as April Fools.

Just in case you think shame as an instrument of internal control and cancel culture to take care of everyone else’s opinion of you are uniquely modern manipulative phenomena, April fools beg to differ. For centuries the axis of banishment has been weaponised by those who know the unique courage it takes to stand out, up or simply by yourself. Latter day whistleblowers and all of the Cassandras in the coalmines and corporations are still telling the same tale, to those with a turned ear or a hummingbird heart that has felt the pain of disclosure and the danger of exclusion. It takes something uncommon and brave to be a fool before everyone else realises, or risks as much. And it counts, more than we know.

In the ancient threads of story the fool is often the luminary in disguise, they who see in simpler clearer terms the true lie of the land. Challenging notions of greatness that arrives wrapped in hubris, devoid of compassion or understanding. Encouraging the brave defiance of naysayers, fearmongers and critics. Taking the leap regardless and trusting its wild initation and all the fear-laced unknowns. In an age of uncertainty, there is even less room to debate the merits. Soon the choice will be to jump or be pushed.

The Fool is the zero card in the major arcana of tarot. The beginning that swallowed the ending. A threshold and initiation tethered to Aries as first sign of the zodiac, the fool steps with faith over the precipice accompanied by the barest necessities of kinship and sustenance. Well aware of risk but trusting the leap of faith, any fool models the truth of initiation. Proving themselves smarter by refusing to let others weight their progress. Stepping off the safe ledge following their soul's calling and the adventure that will qualify the fool to live it. The fool is untethered to crooked belief, bias or the weight of usurped power. Not frightened by initiation; fearlessly emboldened by it and welcoming its challenging terrain.

Crucially in these times of instant gratification and quick step regurgitation, the fool knows initiation cannot be rushed. It serves as entry point not culmination. The fool knows there is more they do not know. Mastery is the false god of sprinters and graspers, those who have given their ego the reins and the microphone. In outsourcing the work to claim premature glory they refuse the struggle of real learning and the wealth of experience it proffers.

Both of these things are compulsory branches of the human experience that we wrangle throughout life. Since its inception in 2019 our Coven, assorted lunatics and the wider witch-curious convene every dark and full moon without fail. So to trace the weave through the wheel of the year, its moons and seasons, its gathering and tipping points. Our practice is a devotion, a sequence we commit and return to, that knits together greater lattices of care and practice. We last met at equinox and now our first full moon of the new astrological year is here. We shall meet again upon its hefty Libran crossroads.

Every fortnight as a devotion to the crooked path - and to the blessed structure it provides our lives no matter how unsupportive the world feels - we dive into the next clutch of evolutionary astrology. And if you still cannot muster it, I’ve resuscitated the Support Sesh offering I threw together in 2020 when the sudden screeching of the world to a halt upset everyone’s apple cart. Sometimes you just need to rant and rave with your very best witch friend, right? Other times you are barely holding things you cannot talk to anyone else in your life about. And some curly eclipse seasons, it’s both and more besides coming at you from the depths.

My support sessions are a hearty dose of tea and empathy where together we throw the bones and the problems of your world out on the table sans shame or fear. Care and counsel that lets you pour it all out, let it all go, not have to hold it all in delivered in a way where you feel seen and heard and better afterwards. Kindness is an even deeper magic that soothes and salves the greatest impossibles. It’s a 45 minute Zoom rave, similar to the panic button sessions my shadow dancers know they can rely on anytime. It is always a great start to getting grounded and feeling better.
